Oh Lucky Country (Paese fortunato) uses first-person point of view to inflate migrant oppression to such absurdist proportions that its swirling narrative boils over into a maelstrom, washing away all migrant clich茅s. It is a witty, tragi-comic view of Australian society, culture and prejudice.
This new edition of Oh Lucky Country, with introductions by Nicole Moore and Gaetano Rando, is a part of the Australian Classics Library series intended to make classic texts of Australian literature more widely available for the secondary school and undergraduate university classroom, and to the general reader. The series is co-edited by Emeritus Professor Bruce Bennett of the University of New South Wales and Professor Robert Dixon, Professor of Australian Literature at the University of Sydney, in conjunction with SETIS, 快猫视频, AustLit and the Copyright Agency Limited. Each text is accompanied by a fresh scholarly introduction and a basic editorial apparatus drawn from the resources of AustLit.

Bush Studies (1902) is a collection of short stories that explore the dark side of the Australian bush experience: loneliness, isolation and danger. The stories, often depicting female suffering, are grimly realistic, in contrast to the masculine romantic notions of the outback as represented by Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson. All six stories in Bush Studies deal with the great themes of birth and death, although only 鈥楤ush Church鈥 renders its theme as comedy, with its disorderly scenes of a church service and multiple christenings gone awry.
This new edition of Bush Studies, with an introduction by Susan Sheridan, is a part of the Australian Classics Library series, which is intended to make classic texts of Australian literature more widely available for secondary school and undergraduate university classrooms, and for the general reader. The series is co-edited by Emeritus Professor Bruce Bennett of the University of New South Wales and Robert Dixon, Professor of Australian Literature at the University of Sydney, in conjunction with SETIS, 快猫视频, AustLit and the Copyright Agency Limited.

Caroline Leakey, writing as Olin茅 Keese, published her first and only novel, The Broad Arrow, in 1859. It tells the story of Maida Gwynnham, a young middle-class woman lured into committing a forgery by her deceitful lover, Captain Norwell, and then wrongly convicted of infanticide. The novel鈥檚 title describes the arrow that was stamped onto government property, including the clothes worn by convicts鈥攁 symbol of shame and incarceration. With its 鈥榝allen woman鈥 protagonist, its gothic undertones and its exploration of the social and moral implications of the penal system, this little-known novel gives an insight into a significant chapter of Australian history from a uniquely female perspective. Published more than ten years before Marcus Clarke鈥檚 For the Term of His Natural Life (1870), it is also a neglected part of Australian literary history.
In this new critical edition, editor Jenna Mead restores material that was cut when the novel was reissued in a radically abridged version in 1886. This restored material is subtly highlighted, allowing interested readers to observe the extent and effect of the 1886 edits, without distracting from the story. It sheds light on the shifting tastes and priorities of the reading public and of publishers in the second half of the nineteenth century, while restoring for the first time in over a century the complete original text of Leakey鈥檚 important work.

John Shaw Neilson (1872鈥1942) is Australia鈥檚 great lyric poet and Collected Poems (1934), dedicated to Louise Dyer, bears his imprimatur. Encouraged by his editor, Robert Croll, Neilson was totally involved in its publication and promotion, selecting the poems, rewriting lines, adding new stanzas and restoring A.G. Stephen鈥檚 earlier changes.
Photographic sittings and book signings followed as well as favourable reviews. Neilson modestly attended readings in his honour at the Bookshop of Margareta Webber and enjoyed the concert broadcasts of Margaret Sutherland鈥檚 compositions, which included 鈥楾he Orange Tree鈥. After reading the Collected Poems she wrote to Neilson: 鈥淚 have set your voice to music.鈥
A new introduction by Dr Helen Hewson, an honorary associate in the School of Letters, Art and Media at the University of Sydney, explores some of the influences that have shaped Neilson鈥檚 poetry 鈥 his Celtic background, religious upbringing, reading and writing, and love of art and music.
